Mid Century Philip & Kelvin LaVerne Bronze and Pewter “Chan Li” Cabinet

Rare and remarkable limited-edition cabinet by celebrated designers Philip LaVerne and Kelvin LaVerne, titled Chan Li. The case is richly clad in acid-etched and patinated polychrome bronze and pewter, presenting finely detailed chinoiserie scenes of the gate to the Forbidden City. The color remains in excellent original condition. Handcrafted in bronze, the cabinet features a refined interlocking lattice-pattern top and a rich mahogany interior fitted with shelving and a single drawer, the drawer front repeating the lattice motif and adorned with a Chinese-inspired paired fish pendant pull. The clean, architectural form is elevated on a stylized Greek Key base, achieving a striking balance between sculptural presence and functional design. Signed “Philip & Kelvin LaVerne.”

According to accompanying documentation, the cabinet comes from the estate of Dr. John Dreyfus, an avid collector of LaVerne works. Records indicate he acquired the piece in 1976 and commissioned an appraisal from Philip LaVerne the following year, affirming both its significance and value within his collection.
